The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesare Catiline, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose devotion is divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved, partly because of his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after a 30-hour shoot for the second episode and a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Eddie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was canceled after the 9/11 attacks because the scene in the script (p. 166) “predicted” the attacks. Coppola completely abandoned the project in 2007 and did not begin its development until 2019. It is assumed that the CCTV footage of Cicero entering Caesar’s office will be shot by two different cameras, as evidenced by the small text in the upper left corner. It’s the huge all-out sweep everyone’s been talking about, and it’s an extremely interesting mess. Among everything that works in Megapolis, there is something that does not work. Some parts are very creative and unlike anything else, but there are long sections that are completely boring. It lasts 138 minutes, but seems to be over the three-hour mark. Whether it looks epic enough or too boring will probably depend on the viewer. It’s also the kind of movie I’m not sure if overanalyzing will help. Coppola tries to say so much in one film, and much of what he says seems meaningless. There were several moments in the film when I wondered if it was all a prank. It may mean a lot to him, or maybe only some parts of it matter, and the rest of the time he’s laughing at us. Somehow I am simultaneously disappointed, tired, confused and impressed. There is a certain balance between entertainment and boredom. Images that look stunning next to visually striking details. This is a film that movie lovers will discuss and remember, while 99% of the population continues to live in blissful ignorance of its existence. I just can’t decide which is better: to be among the blessed majority or among the confused 1%. I cannot give advice to anyone who is thinking of spending 138 minutes of his limited time on this.
